Mobile Home Park May Close Due To City’s Inability To Upgrade Their Own Sewage Treatment Facility
Lake Canyada Mobile Home Park in Scott City, Iowa may have to shut down unless a solution to the county’s sewage problems can be addressed. Currently, the park’s sewage is processed by the county -but not for much longer. That’s because the county cannot afford the upgrades that are being required by the State of Iowa.
As a result, the county has notified all property owners using their sewage system that they will have have to fend for themselves and create their own sewage treatment systems. The cost, in the case of Lake Canyada, would be about $250,000.
Lake Canyada has around 200 mobile homes residing in it. “Now what am I supposed to do if they kick us out of here?” said Carolyn Keller, who has lived in the park for 7 years.
Frank & Dave’s Opinion of This Story:
We guess the true definition of what too small and too poor a market is would have to be when they can’t afford to keep their sewage treatment plant running. We’ve never seen a story like that before -but you also have to blame the Department of Natural Resources for requiring an upgrade when the area is too poor to comply. Have we entered into an era in which the government shows no compassion whatsoever? Probably.

I have lived at Lake Canyada for 11 years and own my own home here. My wife teaches AutoCad at John Deere in Moline and I work for a PC game publisher.
So…is it fair that when a hurricane or flooding puts people out of their houses, they get help from the goverment, state, etc, yet the Iowa DNA can just shut our and 200 other residents water off with a minimal warning if no aggreement is made with the park owners by the end of August, virtually putting us out of our homes?
Because our home (which we have invested 1,000’s of dollars in) was made in 1972 so we can’t even have it moved to another mobile home park!
So what happens to us and our home if we get a short notice we have to leave in few weeks, and leave our home here, when there is nothing wrong with it, when we have paid all our bills, and taxes for 11 years?
I’m disgusted any state/county could do this to a hard working family! I would love to see this mess on 20/20 or another national program.
